Talk to a Dentist… What the hell is it? And, why am I trying to change the culture of how people seek dental advice?

So where did it all begin? Recently my wife and I went to New York for the first time. We wanted to go on a big holiday before our first child arrived. I wasn’t sure if I would like it but we had an amazing time.

During the trip, I was amazed at just how busy the city was and equally how busy its citizens were. The subway epitomized this, hundreds of people crammed in like sardines, and everyone faces down, playing on their phones. This got me to thinking about how I could use technology to improve access to healthcare.

My name is Gregor and I am a dentist. I qualified about five and a half years ago, and since then, I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly of dentistry. It has put me on an emotional rollercoaster ride of highs and lows which lead me on the path to try and develop a better way for people to access healthcare advice. You see I love being a dentist; I just don’t like everything else that goes on around it. The endless paperwork, practice politics, unethical people, people trying to rip you off, people putting money before care, people not following the legislation or the guidelines set out to them. So I decided to head off on my own path and see where I ended up and “Talk to a Dentist” was born.

So back to the question: Why did I set up Talk to a Dentist? Well, there are two main reasons.

The first is that quite simply I wanted to find a way I could work as a Dentist and spend more time at home with my young family.

The second is that I believe there are now better ways for people to interact with healthcare professionals through the use of modern and existing technologies.

The idea behind Talk to a Dentist is pretty simple. If you are looking for some dental advice and would like to “Talk to a Dentist” about it, you can contact us and talk directly to myself, or one of my colleagues over the phone or video call and we will offer you impartial dental advice to help solve your problem.

We can offer you advice on almost anything dental related, such as the types of procedures available to you, the costs involved, time scales, and what you as the patient can expect during the treatment.

We can discuss the difference between NHS and private dentistry, and we can even help you find a dentist in your local area who would best suit you and your dental needs.

If you suffer from dental anxiety, we can help you begin your journey to becoming a regular dental attender.

Currently in the UK over a third of people suffer from dental anxiety and a large percentage of these people don’t visit the dentist regularly. Talk to a Dentist is set up so that these people can easily access advice, which if provided properly could potentially help them access further healthcare services. For some people it’s just not as simple as going to the dentist due to their fear; it is my hope that this service will help them.

Well, I hope that explains why this all began and I’m really looking forward to the journey to see where it takes me.

Disclaimer: Talk to a Dentist is an advice service. Every patient is different and you all deserve individually focused dental care. This blog should be considered a guide, but always remember it’s best to get in touch with us so we can give you individually focused advice.
